Dragon Age: Inquisition takes place in the land of Thedas, which incorporates a number of areas such The Hinterlands, Skyhold and Storm Coast.

The main storyline takes place in some of these areas but not all, so it is entirely possible to play through the entire story without visiting every area. Every area has unique herbs, metals and stone, so while it's not necessary to visit every single area, it can be a good idea! There are also many side-quests and other features to be discovered in these peripheral areas, so it can be very helpful to explore these to acquire immense power and high-quality gear to help you get through some of the tougher challenges.
